'There's more to come... call it a dynasty' | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

By Chris Wilson CANBERRA captain Lucille Bailie was already talking about a three-peat after the Capitals won back-to-back WNBL titles yesterday. The Capitals have contested the past four grand finals and won three titles, but Bailie warned opponents that "there's more to come". She said the Capitals were on the verge of creating a dynasty. "I remember when Lauren [Jackson] re-signed for three years she said 'three years, three more titles'. It's certainly not a ridiculous thing to chase down," Bailie said. "Call it a dynasty. Everyone wants to be a part of that and I don't think you'll see many people leave the program next season. We want to keep building and there's no reason why we can't be a dynasty." The Capitals are one grand final away from equalling the Adelaide Lightning's record of five successive grand finals. They still have a lot of work to do to get near the WNBL's greatest dynasty, the Nunawading Spectres who won an unequalled six WNBL titles in seven years. Bailie said next season would be a giant task for the two-time defending champions. "I think it's challenging to try and stay at the top," Bailie said. "It takes new and innovative coaching to stay there. That's one of the biggest challenges for us. Two-time Capitals championship coach Carrie Graf will return to the club next season to take back her spot from interim coach Tom Maher. She will be at the helm for another two seasons. The core of the Capitals group looks likely to stay together. Jackson and Kristen Veal are both contracted to the club for another two years, Bailie has said she will return and Eleanor Sharp is close to extending her contract. The Capitals are also searching for another forward - possibly Australian Institute of Sport sensation Hollie Grima or former championship player Jacinta Hamilton. There is no doubt that Jackson is the key to more Capitals success. But if this season has proven anything, it's that Jackson has plenty of talent around her at the Capitals. The Capitals had had a terrible year with injuries. It has virtually been a revolving door of players coming in and out. Jackson, of course, had the stress fractures in her shin which prevented her from training and made her miss four games. But Kellie Abrams, Sharp and Nerrida Cooper all had extended time on the sidelines. Still, the Capitals were able to triumph. Meanwhile, making this season even sweeter, the club has been able to groom some young talent such as Cooper, Sarah Berry, Natalie Hurst and Kelly Hannett. |
