Victory oh so sweet for Capitals | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

By Chris Wilson The grand final video was running on a continuous loop at the Lyneham home of Canberra Capitals captain Lucille Bailie yesterday. The Capitals players were glued to the television screen all day. It appeared as though they would never tire of watching their 69?67 win over the Sydney Flames, which secured the club back?to?back Women's National Basketball League titles. "I watched it last night and it's been going non?stop since," Bailie said. The Capitals were finally able to relax yesterday after their tough season ended in a stunning triumph. The players gathered at Bailie's house for a celebration barbecue. For star Lauren Jackson, who carried an injury the entire season, it was the start of a well?deserved holiday. "I'm going to go surfing, which will be very good," Jackson said. "Basically, I'm just going to try and get out of the limelight for a little while." That's exactly what departing Capitals coach Tom Maher did, sneaking out of town yesterday with no fanfare. He will be back for the Capitals' presentation night on Thursday. Maher has won seven WNBL championships, but said his one?season stint with the Capitals had been one of the more special times in his stellar coaching career. "Winning is such a wonderful thing, but there are some extra special reasons for this one," Maher said. |
