Canberra Capitals We're not over the Hill yet

While all of the Canberra Capitals would prefer to be playing this Friday night's elimination semi-final against Adelaide Lightning at home rather than away at least one player has a very good record playing in Adelaide.

Capitals forward Jo Hill, 30, has many fond memories of finals basketball in the city of churches well, at least five.

Hill won five Women's National Basketball League championships out of Adelaide in the '90s before leaving to play in the more lucrative French professional league.

A bit of a championship collector, Hill won titles with North Adelaide in 1990 and Adelaide in '94, '95, '96 and '98.

Now, in her first season with the Capitals after returning to Australia, Hill finds herself in a position where as a key player in Canberra's quest for a three-peat she needs to help topple her former club.

Although she is committed to doing everything she can to help the Capitals beat Adelaide and move into the next round of the finals, it is a new feeling for Hill to be play against Adelaide rather than for it in a finals situation.

"It is a bit strange but I am on the other side now and hopefully we can be the ones on Friday to make another step towards the grand final - both for me personally and for the Caps," Hill said.

Having already won five WNBL championships, some might say Hill is being a little greedy in so hungrily chasing a sixth title with her third different club, but she isn't just thinking about herself.

Basketball is a team game and the whole Capitals team is desperate to win the championship this year and secure its third title in a row - like any good team player Hill just wants to do her bit.

Having already experienced what it feels like to be part of a three-peat with her titles in Adelaide from '94-'96 Hill would like nothing better than to see her new team-mates at Canberra enjoy the same success - and if that means she has to win a sixth championship, then so be it.

"Three championships with three different teams will be great but I know it will be even more special for the other Capitals who were around for the last two championships," Hill said.

"I know what it is like to complete a three-peat. Just to be part of it and to help the girls get to that position this Friday night is all I want to do."

So far this season Adelaide has been able to win two of the three regular season games between the two teams but Hill doesn't think that is relevant.

Why? Because all three games were played during the time Canberra's superstar centre Lauren Jackson was out injured.

Now with Jackson back in the team, on the court, and in form, playing the Capitals has become a whole lot harder.

"It is a big factor and one that Adelaide will have to overcome," Hill said.

"They haven't played against us with Loz in the team and in both the games we played over the weekend she was dominant. Even though we lost on Saturday she still had 35 points.

"Other teams have to double and triple team her and that opens up scoring opportunities for the rest of the team on top of the 30-odd points that Lauren puts in herself.

"They must be a little scared because although they won two of the three games, they played against us without Loz."

Although she does still have an attachment to the Adelaide side, there is no chance it will come between her and giving her best on Friday night.

As a true professional, Hill is 100 per cent a Capital this season.

"There will be some sympathy for them, you always have friends on teams, but not on the court," Hill said.

"Unfortunately someone has to lose but hopefully it won't be us on Friday."
