The Canberra TransACT Capitals will be changing the venue for the final game of the WNBL regular season against the Adelaide Lighting on the 31st of January 2003 from the Tuggeranong Indoor Basketball Stadium to the AIS Arena.
Thanks to the cooperation and support from TransACT, the AIS Arena and Ticketek, this change has been made and the net profit for the game will be donated to the ACT Bushfire Appeal.
“Like all Canberrans, the TransACT Capitals have been deeply effected by last weekends bush fires” said Caps captain Lucille Bailie. “We receive so much support from the Canberra Community and they are so much a part of the success we have achieved. We want to help and give something back to the city we love.”
Since the devastation of the bushfires on Saturday the TransACT Capitals have been actively involved in support activities for the victims of the fires. Continuing on their winning streak and successfully defending their WNBL Championship is high on the TransACT Capital’s list of priorities in order to provide the Canberra community with another element to show their pride and strong community spirit.
All proceeds from the TransACT Capitals game last Sunday against the Townsville Fire were donated to the ACT Bushfires Appeal while Lauren Jackson visited the Lake Ginninderra College refugee centre directly after the game.
All of the players and staff are registered with ACT Volunteering to provide assistance where required and further visits and support for victims of the fires and in charity events will continue.
The game on Friday the 31st will see the TransACT Capitals take on arch rivals the Adelaide Lightning. A must win game for the Capitals to retain their top spot on the WNBL ladder and insure the teams run through the finals, a situation that will be helped with the return of Capitals veteran Eleanor Sharp.
“If we can pack the larger AIS Arena with 4,000 – 5,000 fans, we can do a lot of good” said Eleanor. “This is an opportunity for the ACT Basketball Community to show their support for the bush fire victims”
