Media Release - Wednesday August 20, 2003

Hot on the tail of re-signing naming rights sponsor TransACT Communications, the Canberra “TransACT” Capitals have bolstered their playing stocks by confirming another four players have agreed to contract terms for the 2003/4 Price Attack WNBL season.

In a major recruiting coup for Coach Graf returning to the helm for the upcoming season, the Capitals have secured the services of Olympic silver medallist Jo Hill who will bring incredible experience and impact to the line up. Hill, an AIS graduate has played in Europe with French team Tarbes Gespe Bigorre since winning a silver medal 2000 Olympics with the Australian Opals. She has won a World championship gold medal with the Australian juniors in 1993, and has been a regular member of the Australian Opals squad since 1994.

2002/3 Championship players with the Capitals and Canberra locals Sarah Berry and Nerrida Cooper have also confirmed their continuation and commitment to the program by agreeing to long term contracts with the Capitals. Each have signed 3 year deals and will form an integral part of the future of the program. Berry is an explosive scorer who adds plenty of spark to the team, and Cooper who had an outstanding debutante season is recovering from a knee reconstruction after last years regular season and is on track to hit the court for the season opener on October 4th

The final piece in the puzzle is the confirmation that 18 yo AIS graduate Zoe Carr (185 cm) has also signed. While offering plenty of presence inside the key, Zoe has is an accomplished inside/outside player that will provide plenty of support to Lauren Jackson and captain Lucille Bailie.

In addition to those existing contracted players Jackson, Bailie, Kristen Veal, Eleanor Sharp & Kellie Abrams the signing of these players almost completes the 2003/4 roster. The remaining three contract positions will consist of additional locally developed Canberra players and be confirmed in the near future.

Both Kristen Veal and Jo Hill depart Australia tomorrow with the Australian Opals on their European tour leading up to Olympic qualifying in early September.
