After an epic 30 hour trip, the Canberra TransACT Capitals arrived in Samara late Sunday night (Australian Eastern Standard Time) and spent yesterday resting and taking in some of the sights of Samara.
The Samara region lies on the Volga River. In the area of the ancient Zhiguli Mountains, the Volga makes a great U-turn, encircling the Samarskaya Luka, a nature reserve unique in natural features. Founded in 1586 as a defence post, Samara became the province's principal town in 1851. During World War II, the city served as the USSR's administrative centre, where the Soviet government and many embassies were evacuated to. It is city steeped in history and culture and is one of the fastest growing regions in Russia.
Today the TransACT Capitals take on Mambas de Mozambique who qualified second in the African Championship and are Champions of Mozambique. Whilst not a lot is known about the Africans, this game will probably be the easiest of the tournament. Every other team in the competition feature at least 1 WNBA player with the finals series promising to be the toughest women's basketball contest on the planet.
Canberra TransACT Capitals media will keep you up to date with scores as soon as they come in from Russia.
Today's game agianst Mozambique will be played at 7.30pm AEST
