Yesterdays day off to rest, refocus and slip in a little bit of shopping proved to be beneficial as the Canberra TransACT Capitals defeated Brazilian and South American Champions Sau Paulo Futebal Clube 88 to 66 in the finals of the Women's World Cup in Samara Russia. The win now places the TransACT Capitals in a position to capture the number five spot in the inaugural tournament.
The TransACT Capitals dominated the game in every aspect shooting a strong 55% from the field to Sau Paulo Futebal Clube's 33%. Lead by none other than Lauren Jackson with 31 points, the TransACT Capitals held the advantage at every break without being outscored in a single period. Lucille Bailie provided strong support with 17 points while Jo Hill provided 15 points to continue both girls' good form in this tournament. Sau Paulo Futebal Clube was lead by Brazilian International veteran Janeth Dos Santos Arcain with 18 points.
With one last game to determine their final place in the inaugural tournament, the TransACT Capitals are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the game between Korean Champions Wooribank Hansae and African Vice-Champion and Champion of Mozambique Mambas de Mozambique. The TransACT Capitals will take on the winner of this game, expected to be Wooribank Hansae, to determine fifth and sixth spot. The Korean side have fought their way through the tough Group A with only one narrow victory against Sau Paula Futebal Clube and, if successful over Mambas de Mozambique, should prove to be a very even and competitive match up with our TransACT Capitals.
Regardless of opponent, the Canberra TransACT Capitals next and final game will be on Sunday 19 October at 6:30 AEST.
