The Canberra TransACT Capitals have completed their 2003 FIBA Women's World Cup in Samara, Russia in fifth place after defeating Korean side Wooribank Hansae in last night. Lead by Lauren Jackson with an amazing 46 points and 17 rebounds, the TransACT Capitals played a tough game to win by 11 points, 74 to 63.
The two evenly matched sides slogged it out for three quarters of the game with the TransACT Capitals holding a slight three point advantage at the first quarter break. The Korean’s reversed the deficit in the second quarter to take a one point lead at half time. The third quarter saw the two sides tussle for the lead ending the quarter on 57 a piece. With pride on the line the TransACT Capitals dug deep and proved why they are the reining WNBL Champions keeping the Korean side to just 6 points to their 17 as they ran away with the game. Jackson's continued dominance in this tournament proved to be valuable in such an even game overshadowing an impressive 30 points and 14 rebounds by Wooribank Hansae player Demya Walker. Lucille Bailie continued to provide consistent and effective support chipping in with 11 points.
In other games over the weekend the semi finals between home side Volgaburmash SGAU Samara saw them defeat their Russian counterparts UMMC Ekaterinbourg 75 to 67. This set up a gold medal game against the WNBA Select team who defeated French side USVO Valenciennes 71 to 65. The gold medal game was a tough fought battle with Volgaburmash SGAU Samara setting up a commanding 42 to 26 lead at half time over the WNBA Select team. The second half saw the tables turned with the WNBA Select team coming back at the Russian's outscoring them in both quarters. The strong lead set up by the Russian's in the first half proved to be enough winning by 4 points, 72 to 68.

The TransACT Capitals will travel back to Canberra arriving on Wednesday the 22nd of October at 10:35 am on flight QF1415. The team will have a day off before preparing for their WNBL clash against Townsville Fire in Townsville on Saturday the 25th of October.
