Canberra TransACT Capital's star Lauren Jackson will sit out the next month after bone scans revealed a stress fracture of her tibia. A similar situation occurred last year when injury kept Jackson out of the start of the 2002 / 2003 WNBL season, an injury which has been successfully managed by her for over twelve months.
Jackson will miss at least 5 matches including the games verse Sydney, the AIS, Adelaide, and Townsville. Jackson will undergo treatment under the watchful eye of highly credentialed AIS medical staff which should ensure that the time missed on court is kept to a minimum. After a long WNBA season, following straight into a WNBL season and a World Cup tournament, the forced rest could be a benefit for Jackson allowing her body time to recover from a gruelling schedule.
TransACT Capitals captain Lucille Bailie said Jackson's loss will be a blow for the team, but she knows others will step up in Lauren's absence.
"When Lauren was injured during the 2002/03 season the team rallied and some of the younger players showed we are not just a one-person team," said Bailie. "We are even better equipped this season, with players like former Opal Jo Hill and AIS graduate Zoe Carr ready to show they are truly quality players and keep our winning streak in tact. With last year's "Capital on the Rise" Nerrida Cooper soon to return to the side, we know that our young players will rise to the challenge and continue the team’s success."
"We have always responded well in times of adversity and the next month will be no exception," she said.
The Canberra TransACT Capitals are leading the WNBL competition with a 6-0 record.
