Canberra ‘TransACT’ Capitals star Lauren Jackson has made it two in a row, winning the ‘Price Attack’ Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) Most Valuable Player Award for the 2003-04 season.
Jackson, who also took out last season’s MVP trophy, received 117 votes to comfortably edge Katrina Hibbert of the ‘Rockmans’ Bulleen Melbourne Boomers on 90 votes and win the prestigious award.
Despite missing a third of the regular season (seven games) due to injury, Jackson managed to win the fourth WNBL MVP award of her storied career. The 195cm megastar, who yesterday also received her sixth consecutive selection to the All-Star Five, previously won the award in 1999, 2000 (jointly with Trisha Fallon) and 2003.
During the regular season, Jackson led the league in scoring (27.9), rebounding (13.8), field goal percentage (50.0%) and blocked shots (2.4) and was eighth in the WNBL in steals (1.8).
The woman accepted by most as the greatest female basketballer in the world adds the ‘Price Attack’ MVP trophy to the Most Valuable Player honours she garnered during the 2003 (US) Women’s National Basketball Association season and the 2003 FIBA World Cup for Women.
Jackson will receive her MVP award in a special ceremony at a date to be announced later.
The award, which is this year being presented by Molten, is determined by a poll of the head coaches after each match during the course of the season.
